Managing Difficult Conversations

The Managing Difficult Conversations course provides an opportunity to develop and practice the skills needed to handle challenging conversations that arise in the contexts of patient care, research, and teaching.

Drawing on practical, easy-to-use communication tools, the course will expand your repertoire for managing difficult situations with greater confidence, clarity, and professionalism. Following a concise introduction to the underlying principles, the emphasis is on hands-on practice through realistic scenarios, enabling you to navigate demanding conversations with confidence and competence.

Participants are also invited (optionally) to submit examples of challenging conversations from their own professional experience in advance. Selected cases will be incorporated into the course and explored during the practical sessions.

Objectives
  • Step-change your abilities in leading challenging conversations: Learn to advocate for your interests with clarity and impact.
  • Boost your confidence and leadership effectiveness: Get acquainted with easy-to-apply tools, practice those tools in real-live situations and role-model them to your team. Feel free to share relevant challenges you would like to rehearse.
  • Communicate in a clear and crisp manner: Use difficult conversations techniques to learn more about your discussion partner and actively control your share of speaking.
Target audience

Assistant Professors and Externally Funded Assistant Professors of the Faculty of Medicine and the Vetsuisse Faculty

The course is offered specifically for professors of the Faculty of Medicine and the Vetsuisse Faculty, and can also be credited as a supplementary modul within the Leadership Program for Professors
